Bob Wessels is independent legal counsel, an advisor and arbitrator with over 40 years of experience. After being a law professor for over 25 years (professor of International Insolvency Law, University of Leiden 2007-2014; professor of Civil and Commercial Law, Vrije University Amsterdam 1988-2008) he retired in 2014. He is a prolific author with over 20 books on (international) insolvency law. He is still involved in counsel, research and teaching activities. He has also been a partner of the legal services group HVG and an alliance partner of EY (1993-2005). Since then, he has had his own practice, advising or arbitrating in cases such as Belvedere, Elektrim/Vivendi, Icesave/ Landsbanki, OSX, O.W. Bunker, Steinhoff and Yukos Oil. Since 2017, he is the chair of the independent European think tank the Conference on European Restructuring and Insolvency Law (CERIL).
