A former president of INSOL International, Sumant is currently President of the Society of Insolvency Practitioners of India, Chief Mentor of INSOL India, President, Insolvency Practitioners Bar Association, and Chairman of ASSOCHAM National Council of Insolvency and Bankruptcy. Rated as India’s No. 1 insolvency lawyer by The Legal 500 for many consecutive years, his contributions to reforms in the Indian insolvency system are well recognised. He has recently been conferred global awards – India – Insolvency Lawyer of the Year 2017, and Game Changer of the Year 2017 – by two renowned global entities. 

He is the author of Corporate Insolvency – Law & Practice. Justice A K Sikri, judge, Supreme Court of India has provided the foreword for the book; Justice M M Kumar, President, National Company Law Tribunal has written an additional foreword; Dr M S Sahoo, Chairperson, Insolvency and Bankruptcy Board of India has written the prologue; and UNCITRAL, The World Bank Group and INSOL International have written introductions.

Sumant is currently an adviser to Interim Resolution Professional/Resolution Professional on many high-profile cases, including Amtek Auto Limited and Monnet Ispat and Energy Limited, and is advising foreign financial creditors in Bhushan, among others. 

As senior international consultant to the IMF, World Bank Group, OECD and other development institutions, he has worked extensively on policy matters in Africa, eastern Europe, the Middle East and South Asia.
